Overview: Junk Email Filter is created to keep junk messages that are also known as spam from cluttering Inbox. By default Junk Email filter is turned on and protection level is set to low, the designed setting catches most obvious spam. Sensitivity of Junk Email Filter can be adjusted and messages detected by filter are moved to junk E-mail folder. Moreover, you can also manage your other items such as journal entries from emails in outlook with these filtered messages.

Reasons to Enhance Junk Email Filter Level

  • If your junk email filter is too strict, then your legitimate emails might end up in the junk folder.
  • A lenient filter may allow more spam into your inbox, making it harder to manage.
  • You can adjust the filter of your junk email to suit your preferences accordingly.
  • A stricter filter reduces the risk of phishing and malicious emails.
  • While a well-set filter helps keep your inbox organized by ensuring only important messages get through.

Steps to Change level of Junk Email Protection

  • In the Mail on Home tab, in the delete group, click on Junk and then Junk E-mail Option.
  • On the Option tab, choose the protection level you want.
  • No Automatic Filtering: This Option turns off automatic Junk Email Filter but the messages are still evaluated by using email addresses and domain name in Blocked Sender List.
  • Low: If you don’t receive junk email messages or want to filter only obvious junk messages then select this option.
  • High: If you receive a large number of junk messages, but don’t want to restrict it from the sender safe list, choose this option. Periodically check the Junk Email folder as sometimes the correct message is moved over there.
  • Safe Lists Only: It’s not a most restrictive option as any message that is sent from someone on safe sender lost nor to a mailing list on safe recipient list counts as junk.

Delete Email Instead of Transferring them to Junk Email folder

  • In Mail, on the Home tab, in the Delete group, click on Junk and then Junk Options.
  • On the Options tab, select the checkbox to permanently delete suspected junk email instead of moving it to the junk Email folder.

Conclusion

Adjusting the Junk Email Filter is important for keeping your inbox clean. You can choose between different protection levels such as No Filtering, Low, High, or Safe Lists Only based on your needs. A stricter filter gives better protection from phishing and spam but may block legitimate emails. A lenient filter allows more emails but increases the chance of spam. Fine-tuning these settings and enabling options like auto-deleting junk email can improve both security and email management.
